Wikileaks case: Manning says he considered suicide

Patrick Semansky / AP

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning.

By Courtney Kube, NBC News

FORT MEADE, Md. -- The U.S. soldier accused in the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history broke his silence in court Thursday, speaking in great length and detail about his time in various U.S. military detention facilities.

In the third day of a hearing to determine whether he should face court-martial, Pfc. Bradley Manning began by describing the day he was detained in Iraq on May 27, 2010, and then described each cell and detention facility he's been in since.

After a few days in a facility in Iraq, Manning was taken to Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. He characterized his cell there as a "cage," dark and with no air conditioning. Manning said that after several weeks in the segregation tent at Camp Arifjan he felt like a caged animal. "I was a mess, I totally started to fall apart," he said.

Manning described how he "started to really deteriorate,? and how he was anxious all the time. "I'm going to die, I'm stuck inside this cage," he said he thought to himself, adding, "I had pretty much given up."

He said that on June 30, 2010, he had a mental break from reality. Manning said that he doesn't remember yelling uncontrollably, screaming, mumbling, or making a noose out of his bedsheets, describing everything from those hours as foggy and hazy.

Manning acknowledged that he "certainly contemplated" suicide but that he "didn't want to die," he just wanted to "get out of the cage."? After several weeks of medication, Manning said, he began to "flatten out."

That July, he found out he was moving to another facility, but he had no idea where he was going. He speculated that he could be going to Guantanamo Bay, saying that he was "very scared" and "had no idea" what would happen to him. It wasn't until he was on a plane in Germany that he found out he was flying to Baltimore-Washington International Airport.WI.

Manning said he was "elated" to be back on U.S. soil, but that feeling was trampled when he arrived at Quantico for in-processing. He testified that the Marines conducted a "shark attack" on him, forcing him to fill out paperwork for hours, barking at him the entire time.

During those hours, Manning answered a question about any suicidal tendencies by saying that he is "always plotting, but never acting."? He wasn't thinking about what he was writing so he responded sarcastically he said, adding that he now regrets that. That statement would haunt him for the duration of his time at Quantico.

Manning was placed on suicide risk when he arrived at Quantico, and he stayed at virtually the same restrictive level for his entire nine months there.

During Thursday?s hearing he used a diagram made of white tape on the floor of the courtroom to illustrate how small his Quantico cell was. He put on a suicide smock (the thick, heavy jumper he was given to sleep in at night), showed a suicide mattress, and described his daily life there.

Manning was always in restraints when out of his cell, and he described in detail a minor altercation he had with the guards in January 2011 that led to even further restrictions.

Manning, frustrated to still be on restrictions in March 2011, tried to make his case to the commander at the brig. He argued that if he wanted to kill himself, he could just use his socks or underwear, something already in his cell.

As expected, that caused the brig leadership to begin taking his clothes away from him at night, citing the need to protect him from harming himself. This was how Manning ended up standing naked at count one morning. Manning testified that he spent several minutes standing completely naked as the guards counted the prisoners after his first night without clothes. His clothes were taken away again that night (and every night after that), but the following mornings the guards had his clothes waiting for him before count.

In April 2011, Manning was transferred to the Joint Detention Facility at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He described how strange it felt to be allowed to move around without leg and arm restraints. "It felt awkward," he said. He was surprised to see that at his new facility he was not only given underwear, but he had a T-shirt, shorts, sheets, blankets, a pillow and toiletry items.

Manning testified that this was a "huge upgrade" and he was actually concerned that it was a mistake or miscommunication. Manning got into a verbal and physical altercation with another detainee at Leavenworth, but they were both punished and he has not had any other problems since then.

Overall, Manning testified for more than six hours this afternoon. He was polite, answering sir or ma'am to every question. He rambled at times, clearly unsure how to answer certain questions from his own attorney, and often forgetting names and dates.

We learned a little bit about how he spent his 21 to 23 hours per day in solitary ... he testified that he wasn't allowed to exercise in his cell at Quantico, so he would often "practice various dance moves," calling it "a form of pseudo exercising."

He said he often made faces at himself in the mirror in his cell and played peek a boo with himself, calling the mirror "the most entertaining thing in there." He said he knew he was looking at himself in the mirror, and that he "wasn't seeing anyone else."

Manning acknowledged that he would pretend to lift imaginary weights, calling it strength training, and that he did pretend to have sword fights with himself and that he knew that the guards were watching him.

And he said he prefers non-fiction books and enjoys reading about philosophy and history, but he named John Grisham and Tom Clancy as a couple of his favorite authors.

Court is now in recess. Manning is back in court Friday morning for cross examination from the prosecution.

The Pitch: Selling Team Building Events To Executives | Accolade ...

pitching team building events

Team building events continue to gain traction in the corporate world as immeasurably valuable tools for bringing workforces together. But selling the idea to your executive staff isn?t always easy.

We?ve written on the blog before how the value of team building events is a contested issue. In spite of the fact that businesses who engage in team building events benefit from the experiences ? noticing improved morale, communication, productivity, and creativity ? there are plenty of detractors who claim that, because not all of team building?s merits are quantitative, the approach to managing through team building is a waste.

However, that perspective is a minority one, and it has diminished over the past decade, with team building becoming more and more of a focus. And if you?ve arrived here ? reading this article ? it stands to reason that it isn?t you who need convincing, but maybe some of the executive decision-makers above you who hold the purse strings.

It?s true that executives typically need to see and acknowledge a palpable ROI on anything before they?ll spend money on it. And given the claims that some of team building events? benefits don?t always show up on pie graphs (which in itself isn?t really true ? businesses typically realize gains in quality control and productivity after participating in team building), selling team building events can be tricky. That being said, here are a few solid selling points that can help:

Get ROI On Corporate Events & Entertainment

One of the great things about team building events is that they can be integrated into corporate events and entertainment, such as the office Christmas Party, New Year?s party, or summertime office picnic. Executives might grimace at having to spend money on those sorts of events, but they still do it. At the very least, most businesses hold some sort of Christmas party. The ROI reasoning for these events is to increase morale. Well, morale is a completely immeasurable factor, and yet executives will OK office events.

This is a perfect opportunity to further increase the ROI of corporate events and parties. By adding in fun, team building-inspired events, corporate entertainment will also contribute to increased productivity, trust, communication, and quality. In this way, team building become a value-added component of an expenditure that executives were already prepared to make, anyway.

Start Small

If you have an executive team that is really skeptical of the value of team building events, suggest that you start small. Rather than involving the entire workforce in a wide-ranging event, starting with one specific department can serve as a test segment to see the effects of team building.

The best approach is to bring up this idea in the context of a meeting where a faulty department or business process is being discussed, and a solution searched for. Has a team really let the business down? Is there a portion of the company that is constantly feuding, and multiple approaches have already been tried, but to no avail? This is a perfect opportunity to suggest a team building event as a trial. If it has a positive impact on a small, dysfunctional component of your business, then you?ll have justification in expanding a future event to include the entire team.

Involve The Execs

We?ve written time and time again here on the blog that team building isn?t solely about employees ? it also must involve management as well. In many cases, barriers form between management and staff, which are often the cause of blockages in communication, oversight, and trust. This is equally true when it comes to the executive staff and middle management.

There is no reason why team building cannot involve executives. While there might be a reluctance for executives to involve themselves in a team building event, it?s worth noting that attending such an event need not implicate the executive as ?the problem.? Generally, issues in the office are systemic, and because they affect the entire team, the entire team should be involved.

Convincing your executive staff to invest in team building can be a process. But if you can manage to just get them to experience one single event ? and its benefit ? you?ll sell them for life on the merits of team building!

Brad Pitt Opens Up About Fatherhood And Getting Older

Posted: November 28, 2012

brad pitt

Brad Pitt may thoroughly enjoy being a mega movie star, but there is something he loves even more ? being a dad. The Killing Them Softly star opened up about his thoughts on fatherhood and aging during an interview with Good Morning America.

Angelina Jolie, 37, and Pitt, 48, are raising six children together. Their longstanding relationship will result in a trip the alter soon, but the power couple is staying mute about the details, according to Entertainment Weekly. The Pitt-Jolie brood includes Maddox, 11, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 6, and a pair of 4-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

During the interview with Good Morning America, Pitt noted that becoming a parent ?turns everything on its head? and stated emphatically twice how much he loves being a father. The large family splits their time between several homes, but reportedly spent a lot of their days in the birthplace of jazz ? New Orleans. Brad and Angelina also have a home in Los Angeles, which comes in handy when either one are working on a new film. A home in Europe is also part of the family?s future plans.

Pitt had this to say when discussing spending time a home in Europe:

?They [the children] get more sense of normalcy there. We?re not as hounded at certain places there. France, especially. They have rules about photographing kids. And I think they?re more sensitive to it after the Diana incident. We?re not being bothered.?

The handsome actor turns 49 next month and is already thinking about the big 5-0 looming on the horizon. Pitt had this to say about chalking up another birthday:

?I?ve given a lot of thought to it. You become very aware of time. I think also being a father, you become very ? everything?s time allocation for me now ? spending my time wisely and doing the things that are important to me.?

Flu-like Symptoms Could Bench Kobe Bryant

Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant reportedly missed his informal practice session this afternoon because of ?flu-like symptoms,? and it?s not yet?known?whether he will play in tonight?s game against the Indiana Pacers.

Although the common cold and influenza are both respiratory viruses that can often get mistaken for one another in the early stages,? Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University, said whether people could complete a workout?was a good indicator of which virus they had.

?With a cold, actually going to the gym will frequently make you feel better,? said Schaffner,? ?If you try to exercise with influenza, it makes you feel worse.?

For a?patient with a cold, a good workout will boost adrenaline and open up nasal passages, Schaffner said. A flu patient will probably feel too weak to attempt physical activity.

Michael Jordon became possibly even more famous after he played what would become known as ?the flu game? in 1997. Despite flu symptoms, Jordon finished the game?scoring?38 points for the Chicago Bulls, including a three-pointer in the final few seconds of the game, bringing the total score to 88-85, according to NBA.com.

Some Tips to Improve Your Credit Scores ? Bnr.Co

Credit scores are essential to any person. They can help you get less expensive bargains on loans and credit contracts. Basically, the better your scores the much better the chances of you getting better offers. Bad scores can do nothing at all excellent to you particularly when dealing businesses that want to look at these scores and assess you from them.

Some would believe that it is difficult to repair or fix credit scores. This is not really that tough to do. There are numerous methods to increase your credit card scores and all that is needed is a little discipline and perseverance on your component. Here are some methods in which you can improve it.

  • The best way to increase your score is to spend your dues on time. This could seem straightforward and unhelpful to numerous but this is really the greatest way to improve it. Credit scores reflect your credit and your paying behavior that is why paying on time should be your priority.
  • Keeping track of your credit reports and score is also a way to increase on them. Understanding about them lets you know exactly where you stand financially. Also, you can maintain track of inconsistencies and discrepancies that would give you unfavorable comments that would affect your credit scores and credit reports.
  • You must use older credit accounts. An older credit card background is good factor when it comes to credit scores. Active accounts give a good effect it.
  • You require to be aware of the way you use your credit cards and your credit limits. Both of them are typically used to assess you as this ratio also affects the assessment of credit scores. The decrease this ratio, the better your scores.
  • Decide accounts that you have no use of. If you have accounts that you no longer use take the initiative of closing them yourself. This would look far better in credit reports and scores than if the businesses themselves had been the ones who closed your account for you.
  • Challenging faulty and unfavorable figures in credit reports could assist your scores. Credit reporting institutions get their data from credit agencies. If there is some thing wrong in the credit reports do your very best to appropriate it immediately.

There are several other things that could help your scores. There are also several other businesses that would supply to do this for you. Even though it is not impossible to do this, there are those that are simply taking advantage of your want. You want vigilance and the understanding that only you can alter it.

Scientists at American Geophysical Union conference present new findings on a resource becoming more precious than gold

Visualize a dusty place where stream beds are sand and lakes are flats of dried mud. Are we on Mars? In fact, we're on arid parts of Earth, a planet where water covers some 70 percent of the surface.

How long will water be readily available to nourish life here?

Scientists funded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems (CNH) program are finding new answers.

NSF-supported CNH researchers will address water resources management and policy in a changing world at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), held in San Francisco from Dec. 3-7, 2012.

In the United States, more than 36 states face water shortages. Other parts of the world are faring no better.

What are the causes? Do the reasons lie in climate change, population growth or still other factors?

Among the topics to be covered at AGU are sociohydrology, patterns in coupled human-water resource systems and the resilience of coupled natural and human systems to global change.

Researchers will report, for example, that human population growth in the Andes outweighs climate change as the culprit in the region's dwindling water supplies. Does the finding apply in other places, and perhaps around the globe?

Scientists presenting results are affiliated with CHANS-Net, an international network of researchers who study coupled natural and human systems.

NSF's CNH program supports CHANS-Net, with coordination from the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability at Michigan State University.

CHANS-Net facilitates communication and collaboration among scientists, engineers and educators striving to find sustainable solutions that benefit the environment while enabling people to thrive.

"For more than a decade, NSF's CNH program has supported projects that explore the complex ways people and natural systems interact with each other," says Tom Baerwald, NSF CNH program director.

"CHANS-Net and its investigators represent a broad range of projects. They're developing a new, better understanding of how our planet works. CHANS-Net researchers are finding practical answers for how people can prosper while maintaining environmental quality."

CNH and CHANS-Net are part of NSF's Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability (SEES) investment. NSF's Directorates for Geosciences; Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences; and Biological Sciences support the CNH program.

"CHANS-Net has grown to more than 1,000 members who span generations of natural and social scientists from around the world," says Jianguo "Jack" Liu, principal investigator of CHANS-Net and Rachel Carson Chair in Sustainability at Michigan State University.

"CHANS-Net is very happy to support another 10 CHANS Fellows--outstanding young scientists--to attend AGU, give presentations there, and learn from leaders in CHANS research and build professional networks. We're looking forward to these exciting annual CHANS-Net events."

Speakers at AGU sessions organized by CHANS-Net will discuss such subjects as the importance of water conservation in the 21st century; the Gila River and whether its flows might reduce the risk of water shortages in the Colorado River Basin; and historical evolution of the hydrological functioning of the old Lake Xochimilco in the southern Mexico Basin.

Other topics to be addressed include water conflicts in a changing world; system modeling of the Great Salt Lake in Utah to improve the hydro-ecological performance of diked wetlands; and integrating economics into water resources systems analysis.

"Of all our natural resources, water has become the most precious," wrote Rachel Carson in 1962 in Silent Spring. "By a strange paradox, most of the Earth's abundant water is not usable for agriculture, industry, or human consumption because of its heavy load of sea salts, and so most of the world's population is either experiencing or is threatened with critical shortages."

Fifty years later, more than 100 scientists will present research reflecting Rachel Carson's conviction that "seldom if ever does nature operate in closed and separate compartments, and she has not done so in distributing Earth's water supply."

The Family Tree

?Steve, please get the Christmas decorations out of the attic. Now.?

The response from the recliner in the other room was very unChristmas-like.

?Bah humbug,? a man?s voice growled.

It was the annual battle of their marriage. ?Judy Gibson loved decorating for Christmas. Her husband loved watching football.

?Why are we putting up a tree anyway? The kids are gone. They live out of state. ?We?re flying out to see them this year.? ?Steve knew the answer, but picked at his wife anyway.

Judy quietly shook her head. ?Married to Steve for nearly 40 years, she closed her eyes and remembered their wedding. The base chapel had been decorated for Advent. ?She could still smell the fresh-cut cedar branches and see the burning candles. ?And there was Steve, standing proudly at the alter in his Naval uniform, weighing maybe 160 lbs. ? Steve was like a tree now; you could cut him in half and count forty rings from where he had put on weight over the years. Judy remembered their honeymoon at Biltmore House in Asheville. The Vanderbilt?s mansion was so beautifully decorated for the holidays. Being a young girl from Mississippi, she had never seen a house that big. ?Something about the mountains, the trees and the Christmas ornaments touched her heart. When she saw the banquet room and its big tree, she vowed they would always have a great tree, too.

Father Noel?s Tree Farm had provided their one. ?Steve struggled to strap it to the top of their Chevrolet Impala wagon. ?She remembered it looking like a walking tree as he hauled it into their one-bedroom base apartment. ?They were so poor that the only ornaments they owned ?were ribbon ornaments made from a red and white checkered table cloth. ?Hot lights and reflectors illuminated the dry tree. It was a miracle they didn?t burn base housing down.

It was 1972. ?And since there was little Peace on Earth and goodwill to men, Steve had been overseas for most of the year. ?That fall, he brought back ornaments from all his ports of call. ?And then they took a trip to Hawaii. That December, their new tree had five new ornaments joining the ribbons. ?Her favorite was the palm tree with the lady with the ukelele. She could almost hear Don Ho singing ?Tiny Bubbles? when she saw it at the tacky little souvenir shop.

The next Christmas Steve and Judy had a new member of the family. ?Frances May Gibson was born nine months after their trip to Hawaii and the new tree had a new ornament as well. It was a wooden stork with the time, date and weight of the new baby. ?The next two trees found two more storks joining Frances May?s. ?Steve Jr. and Albert Frances were now part of ?the young family.

Steve was promoted to a command position on the U.S.S. Enterprise and soon a small aircraft carrier ornament joined the storks and the ribbons. ?Judy diligently saved up Green Stamps and got a set of beautiful gold glass ball ornaments. Those were bought when they lived in Norfolk, Virginia. ?There was a Norfolk ornament, too. ?Every town they lived in would have its own ornament. Like in their heart, it would have a special place in their tree.

The next year, Frances May came home with a special ornament made in preschool. ?It was made from a margarine lid, red construction paper and a photo of her ponytailed, tooth-missing freckled face. ?Each kid would come home with similar ornaments over the years. And each would have its own place on the tree.

The next summer found the Gibsons headed to Disney World. ?Most folks would have pitied the couple hauling the three kids around the Magic Kingdom. But Judy and Steve were having as much fun as the kids. ?Judy saved up her spare change and bought a beautiful globe with Cinderella?s castle on it. ?Mickey himself would have been proud of the place of honor given to the ornament.

In the mid-1980?s Steve came home from a cruise with a big box. ??I saw this and had to get it for you.? ?Judy unwrapped the golden paper and saw the most beautiful angel she had ever seen. ?I thought she looked like you,? Steve grinned. He climbed up the stepladder and proudly placed it on the top of the tree.

Steve and Judy had a little cat named Nixon when they were married. ?Nixon had his ornament. ?Nixon was soon joined by a terrier-mix named Snowflake. ?She had her own ornament, too. Nixon tragically was hit by a Captain?s car on a rainy November night. ?Snowflake died of old age and soon a small puppy named Lady Bird joined the family. The pets were well represented with ornaments. So were all the trips Steve and Judy took around the world. Barcelona, Paris, New York, Washington D.C., London all hung on their family. Steve liked the little Eiffel Tower the best. ? It reminded him of holding hands with Judy during strolls down the busy Paris streets.

Tragedy struck the family in 1992. ? Albert, their youngest, died in a car accident on the way to The University of Maryland. ?Judy?s hand shook uncontrollably as she hung his ornaments on the tree the following Christmas. Steve had not wanted to put up the tree. He felt that they should cancel Christmas and take the family as far away from their home as possible. But Judy insisted the tree be put up. ?Seeing the ornaments hang on the conifer?s branches healed her battered heart. ?She stretched out on the floor every night, staring at the tree and cried.

Soon there were ornaments with college mascots, wedding photos and birth announcements. Grandchildren?s favorite toys hung from the branches. ?The joy of the early 1970?s returned as the little kids stared in awe at the giant tree covered with ornaments. ?Judy loved the tell the kids the stories behind every single one of them.

In 2005, Steve retired as a Rear Admiral. ?A single star hung from a branch signifying his distinguished naval career. ?Judy survived a bout with breast cancer earlier that year and a pink ribbon was placed on the tree. ?They continued to travel. ?Ornaments from towns from far across the nation soon joined the tree. They were where their children now lived. The tree and the memories it represented filled the empty nest.

?Steve, get up in the attic and get the boxes down. It?s time to decorate the tree.?

Grumbling preceded the retired Admiral as he faked protest. ?He knew the importance of this day.

First the lights went up. Then the beads. Christmas music from every year of their marriage played on the iPad. Then came the red ribbons. The sacred red ribbons. They always were the first to go on. Each box held ornaments from an event, place or person. She and Steve put up Albert?s ornaments. Her hand shook slightly as she looked as her lost son?s handsome face. Copious tears ran down her cheeks. ?How she missed the boy.

Then, branch by branch, the ornaments filled up the giant Scotch Pine.

Their Christmas was a scrapbook of their life together. Branches were chapters and ornaments were pages. Each represented a special time or place.

Steve and Judy held hands and admired their work when they finished. To them, it was more than just a Christmas tree. It represented their amazing life together.

It was their family tree.

Boxing - Hector 'Macho' Camacho dies after shooting | Scoop Hunters

Three-time world boxing champion Hector ?Macho? Camacho has died four days after he was shot in the face in a drive-by shooting. He was 50.Camacho was pronounced dead after being taken off life support following a second heart attack early Saturday morning, Rio Piedras Medical Director Ernesto Torres said.

Hector ?Macho? Camacho

Puerto Rico officials planned a public wake for the boxer at the Department of Sports & Recreation headquarters in San Juan, but details were pending.

The former U.S. boxing champ had been declared brain dead on Thursday after he was shot on Tuesday while sitting in a car with a friend, Adrian Mojica Moreno, 49, outside a liquor store in the San Juan suburb of Bayamon, Camacho?s birthplace.

Two gunmen opened fire on the car, killing the driver, Mojica Moreno, and hitting Camacho in the jaw. The bullet fractured two vertebrae and lodged in his shoulder, damaging the arteries that carried blood to the brain, doctors said. Police found nine small bags of cocaine in the driver?s pockets and one open in the car. The shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been made.

Camacho, a left-handed fighter who grew up in New York?s Spanish Harlem neighborhood, had a record of 79-6-3 with 38 knockouts. His three-decade career featured fights with a ?who?s who? of boxing and a flamboyant style that included entering the ring in an outfit based on the Puerto Rican flag.

Camacho?s body was taken to the hospital?s pathology section and brought to the Institute of Forensic Sciences as required by law, Torres told reporters. El Nuevo Dia newspaper reported the family planned a funeral in New York, where Camacho grew up. Family members had debated removing him from life support, with some members including his son Hector ?Machito? Camacho holding out hope for his recovery.

On Friday evening, his mother Maria Matias acknowledged during a brief talk with reporters at the medical center that that ?God has taken him? and indicated that she was waiting for the arrival of Camacho?s other children to Puerto Rico before disconnecting him.

Some family members had discussed organ donation, but Torres said too much time had passed from when the former fighter was declared brain dead on Thursday morning to donate his organs now.

Camacho Jr. lamented the crime and violence confronting Puerto Rico. ?You have to stop the violence and the drugs. Rap singers have to stop glorifying violence. This is for the youth. All the street promises them now is death, drugs, and jail.? Yahoo News

Clay's TD lifts No. 14 Sooners to 51-48 Bedlam win

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? After the first overtime game in the Bedlam rivalry, a wild celebration on Owen Field and yet another 500-yard passing game, it all settled in for Landry Jones.

His last home game with Oklahoma was over, and what a way to go out.

Jones threw three touchdown passes and Brennan Clay scored on an 18-yard run in overtime to lift the 14th-ranked Sooners to a 51-48 win against No. 22 Oklahoma State in the Bedlam rivalry on Saturday.

"No better way," Jones said. "God blessed me so much tonight to be able to go out like this.

"There's no better way to go out."

The Sooners (9-2, 7-1 Big 12) never led during regulation, wiping out double-digit deficits in both halves. Backup quarterback Blake Bell tied it with 4 seconds left on a 4-yard keeper on fourth-and-1 after Jones directed the first 16 plays of an extended drive.

The victory kept alive Oklahoma's chances for at least a share of the Big 12 championship. The Sooners could win it outright by beating TCU next week if No. 7 Kansas State loses to Texas.

"Football's a crazy game," Jones said. "There's up sand downs, good and bad. You have to stay somewhere in that middle ground, realizing who you are and what you're capable of and what type of offense you are.

"When you need a play, just go out and make it."

On the Sooners' second play, Clay got through traffic at the line of scrimmage and then broke through attempted tackles by Daytawion Lowe and Shamiel Gary to score the game-winner and set off an unusually giddy celebration on Owen Field.

The Sooners had lost only three times at home in Bob Stoops' first 13 seasons but dropped games this season against Kansas State and Notre Dame.

Players ran around the field in celebration, joining fans in the stands in leaping up and down when "Jump Around" was blared over the loudspeaker.

"It always feels great to go out on a win," Jones said.

Joseph Randle ran for 113 yards and matched his career-high with four touchdowns for Oklahoma State (7-4, 5-3), which settled for Quinn Sharp's 26-yard field goal in overtime.

Last season, the Cowboys blew out Oklahoma 44-10 to snap an eight-game losing streak in the series and win their first Big 12 championship outright.

Oklahoma State fans rushed the field and tore down the goalposts after that win. A year later, the elation was replaced with disappointment.

"The truth is the better your program gets, the more success you have and the more highly regarded you are, the harder it is to lose," coach Mike Gundy said.

"In a World Series, a Super Bowl or a state championship game when you lose it's a crushing blow. And the only reason is because you've taken it to another level. For the most part, this program's at a different level."

With his second straight 500-yard passing game, Jones surpassed Texas Tech's Graham Harrell to become the Big 12's career passing leader. He also became the first Bowl Subdivision quarterback ever to throw for 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns in four seasons.

He led Oklahoma's first fourth-quarter comeback victory in five years a week earlier, beating West Virginia 50-49 on a pass to Kenny Stills with 24 seconds left.

"What more do you want from the guy? The guy was, again, fabulous out there tonight," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. "He threw the ball all over. He threw it well, throwing bullets everywhere."

Jones finished 46 of 71, both school records, with an interception.

Clint Chelf threw for 240 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 63 yards for the Cowboys, who were trying to win on Owen Field for only the ninth time but couldn't protect an early 14-0 lead or an 11-point edge in the second half.

"There were a lot of big plays. You know there's going to be ups and downs throughout the game, so we were prepared for that," Chelf said. "We just tried to answer every time they did something and they just made one more play than us."

Jalen Saunders tied it at 38 on the second play of the fourth quarter, dodging three early tackles and racing 81 yards up the Sooners' sideline to score on a punt return.

Oklahoma State answered two possessions later, going 77 yards and taking a 45-38 lead on J.W. Walsh's 2-yard keeper with 10:41 remaining. The Cowboys sacked Jones on third down and forced an incomplete pass on fourth down to get the ball back with 7:07 to play, but went three-and-out to give it right back and set up Oklahoma's tying drive.

"We're strong," Clay said. "We're strong-willed and we can face adversity. We can go through any obstacle, and we know this offense is very potent."

(AP) ? Steven Spielberg asked sixteen newly minted Americans to remember equality as the Abraham Lincoln biopic director marked the 149th anniversary of the president's famous "Gettysburg Address."

Spielberg addressed citizens from 11 countries who took the oath of allegiance to become U.S. citizens Monday at the Soldier's National Cemetery in Gettysburg.

After spending seven years working his new movie "Lincoln," Spielberg says the 16th president came to feel like one of his oldest and dearest friends. He says Lincoln would want us to realize equality is a "democratic essential."

Gettysburg is where the U.S. military was able to stop an invasion of the North by Confederate troops under Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Lincoln gave the three-minute speech, which famously begins with the phrase, "four score and seven years ago," at the dedication of the cemetery four months after the battle.
