Sometimes the idea of a locally-sourced, relaxing and delicious dinner is just the remedy after a long and grueling week. ?Sometimes the idea of fighting car or T traffic into the city to get to that dinner is not appealing at all. ?For those west of the city, Lineage in Brookline provides all of the comfort and?luxuries?of any top Boston?restaurant?without the stress of getting there. ?For others in the city and beyond, it provides a T-accessible destination worthy of making the trip.
Lineage invited me to a dinner to celebrate their 6-year anniversary and redesign of their dining room. ?If you like the looks of The Hawthorne, you will appreciate the same designers who also updated the look at Lineage. ?The menu changes daily and is therefore not available online, but here is a glimpse of what you can expect of their dinner offerings.
Spicy Lobster Tacos with avocado mousse and mango salsa ($14)
These tacos are pretty much a staple on the Lineage menu. ?And they are a labor of love. ?Twice a week, anywhere between 600 and 700 pounds of lobster and trucked from York Harbor, Maine back to Lineage, as well as Hotel Commonwealth. These tacos were recently named in Improper Bostonian as a top 20 seafood dish.
Wood Oven Pizza with wild ramps, tasso ham and parmesan ($12)
Ramps are all the rage right now and I was not surprised to see them appear on Lineage?s menu.? A thick-crust, wood oven pizza was topped with generous portions of ramps, tasso ham and parmesan.? Despite its small size, this appetizer is perfect for splitting as the thick crust is crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and pretty filling for a small slice.
Arugula Salad with strawberries, cottage cheese, preserved lemon and honey vinaigrette ($10)
This salad was a delight from the start. The arugula was crisp and not overdressed, the sweet strawberries playing off the tart lemon preserved lemons. The cottage cheese is an addition I have never experienced in a salad before, but really liked the creaminess it added to the vinaigrette, while maintaining a light dressing.
Crispy Soft Shell Crab Nicoise over frisee with hard boiled egg, haricot vert, pearl onion and queen olives ($24)
I have to admit: I am not the biggest fan of soft shell crab. It?s a texture issue with me; I have a hard with the shell, no matter how soft. I really liked the presentation of this dish, the crab centerpiece perched atop a nicoise salad. The crab was so perfectly fried that despite my hesitation, I found it very tasty.
Seared Scituate Sea Scallops over confit pork belly, green garlic, roasted mushrooms and black lentils ($28)
Fresh. Sweet. Succulent. Scallops were seared to a beautiful deep brown. Served atop a small bed of black lentils, the flavor really complimented the scallops.? It was difficult for me to distinguish the confit but the combination worked regardless.
Butterscotch Pudding
Dessert was a butterscotch pudding topped with a light whipped cream. As you may know, dessert isn?t always my thing, but this pudding was incredible: not as thick as one would expect, and surprisingly not too sweet. Perfect way to end a meal.
Since the menu changes daily, you cannot find one online.? Here is the menu that was offered on the night of our visit, to give you an idea of other menu items that are offered by Chef de Cuisine Richard Morin (click twice to view larger).
Lineage is located at 242 Harvard St in Brookline?s Coolidge Corner, and just steps away from the Cleveland Circle stop on the green line (C ? Cleveland Circle).?
Lineage invited me to their spring menu tasting; all opinions are my own.
