Mayor Joe Riley and Police Chief Greg Mullen know violence plagues the Holy City. They also know the war against violent crime is a war city officials cannot fight alone.

On Friday, they announced their newest defense in the city's deadly war: the Stand Up Charleston initiative. It is a program meant to bring together community officials, leaders and citizens to help stop--and ultimately prevent violent crimes from happening.

"We must show those within our community who would do harm, that those of us who call Charleston home are not going to allow this to occur," Mayor Riley said.?"We are ready to stand up."

According to Charleston police statistics, murders seem to be on the rise. In 2008, 14 people were murdered. That number fell significantly in 2009 with nine homicides, but increased one a year through the end of 2011. So far, there have been seven homicides in 2012.

Several city officials and leaders, including city council members and church members,?attended the afternoon press conference. The mayor introduced? Margaret Seidler, a lifetime Charlestonian, as the person spearheading the local?campaign against crime.

Other city officials discussed the recent passage of Senate Bill 45, a piece of legislation awaiting Gov. Nikki Haley's signature. It is a measure that would transform the state's justice system, starting with how people would bond out of jail.

Riley and Mullen said the new initiative and, hopefully, the new law, will encourage people to come forward with information that could help solve a crime.

"It is critical that...those who have a stake in making sure that we stop this carnage that we see with these violent repeat offenders continually committing crimes and being on our streets," Mullen said.
