The Lance Armstrong Foundation has officially changed its name to the Livestrong Foundation, further distancing itself from the cyclist in the wake of the sport?s biggest doping scandal, says?Reuters. The move took effect Oct. 30 after the charity, which Mr. Armstrong founded in 1997 after surviving testicular cancer, filed paperwork with the state to make the change.
Long known informally as Livestrong, the foundation has raised some $500-million for cancer research and services for survivors. Following the release last month of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency?s report on Mr. Armstrong?s alleged cheating, the cyclist first resigned as the charity?s chairman then stepped down from its board.
?All of us?especially Lance?wanted Livestrong to have a presence that was bigger than its founder,? said Mark McKinnon, a foundation board member. ?We knew that in order to make the most profound and lasting impact for cancer survivors, the cause and the organization had to have its own persona.?
