Former Syracuse players dot NBA summer league rosters

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The NBA's Orlando Summer League will serve as a reunion of sorts for several former Syracuse University players.

The Orlando Summer League, which begins play on Sunday and runs through July 12, consists of teams representing 10 NBA franchises. Seven former Syracuse players are listed on the rosters of those 10 teams.

Michael Carter-Williams, who was taken by the Philadelphia 76ers with the No. 11 pick in last week's NBA draft, will play for his new team. Carter-Williams will be joined by former SU teammate James Southerland, who was not drafted despite making 39.8 percent of his 3-point shots this past season.

Another player off the Syracuse team that advanced to this past year's NCAA Final Four who will be in Orlando is Brandon Triche. Triche, an undrafted free agent, signed to play for the Charlotte Bobcats' summer league team.

In addition to Carter-Williams and Southerland on the Sixers' squad, a second NBA team will have two former Orange player on its summer roster. Fab Melo and Kris Joseph, who were NBA rookies last season, will play for the Boston Celtics. Boston took Melo in the first-round of the 2012 NBA draft. Melo appeared in just six games with the Celtics last season, while spending most of his rookie year in the NBA D-League with the Maine Red Claws. With Maine, Melo averaged 9.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and led the D-League with 3.1 blocks per game.

Joseph was a Celtics' second-round draft choice last year. He played in six games for the Celtics, but spent most of his time in the D-League. In a financial move, the Celtics released Joseph during the season. He signed with the Brooklyn Nets, who assigned him to Springfield of the D-League.

Joseph averaged 18.6 points in the D-League between Maine and Springfield. He was a member of the All D-Leaggue second team.

The Nets brought Joseph up late in the season and he appeared in four games with Brooklyn.

Brooklyn traded Joseph back to Boston last week in the deal that sent Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to the Nets.

Rick Jackson, who last played for Syracuse in the 2010-11 season, will play for the Utah Jazz in Orlando. Jackson averaged 9.3 points and 9.1 rebounds while playing for the D-League's Austin Toros last season.

Finally, Jonny Flynn will return to the States to play for the Indiana Pacers' team in Orlando. Flynn, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft, had his NBA career derailed by a serious hip injury.

Flynn went to Australia last season to play for the Melbourne Tigers. He averaged 16.8 points and 6.0 assists in Australia, perhaps kick-starting his NBA career.

The NBA's summer will continue with the Las Vegas Summer League, which begins on July 13. More former Syracuse players will on Vegas rosters, including Demetris Nichols (Miwaukee Bucks) and Andy Rautins (Chicago Bulls).
