More Fl schools would get grades (or ratings) under House plan ...

Last year, 392 of Florida?s public schools didn?t get a grade or an ?improvement rating? as part of the state?s annual school report card, according to the Florida Department of Education.

That was 11 percent of the state?s 3,623 schools.

?Most of them were just too small under current state law, meaning?they didn?t have enough students with current or past year?s FCAT?scores to?run?the A-to-F grade calculation (or the improvement rating?used for alternative schools).

But now a House education subcommittee is considering a bill that would?reduce the minimum?number of students required to run the calculations. It would drop from 30 to 10, allowing more schools to get graded or rated.

For those who believe the grades provide an important window into a school?s success (or shortcomings), it?s an effort to make sure small schools don?t escape scrutiny.

The proposed bill would also delete from the grade calculations the scores of students at ?center schools,? places for students with severe disabilities, if those students have been at an?exceptional student center? for the past three years.

Those students were fully included in calculations for the first time in 2012, thanks to a controversial mandate from the federal government.

The result was that the centers either got low grades (Ds and Fs) or those students? scores counted toward their ?home? school?s grade, even if that school was their home in name only, meaning it was the zoned school for their neighborhood but not a place they?d ever attended.
