Newport Fire Captain Richard Giles is training these days to participate in a highly unusual event ? a horrendous firefighter stair climb that raises money for blood cancer research. Giles is going to join over a thousand other firefighters March 10th in a mad dash, with full turnout gear and breathing equipment (47 lbs), up the tallest building in Seattle, the Columbia Center ? 69 flights of stairs, 1,311 steps and nearly 800 feet of vertical elevation. Giles is also asking Lincoln County residents to donate to the cause by going to www.FirefighterStairclimb.org and clicking on ?donate? and then filling in his name, Richard Giles. The donation is tax deductible.

It?s called the 22nd Annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb which raises funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society which then awards those funds to promising research efforts aimed at eradicating blood cancer disease from the planet.

Giles is pictured with his fellow firefighters who were give promotions before the Newport City Council. Giles is the firefighter second from the left.

In 2012, the event featured over 1,550 firefighters from 281 different departments and brought in a record $1.2 Million for blood-cancer research and patient services.
